Known nationally for innovation in higher education, Dr. Miller has fine-tuned a wide range of leadership and teambuilding skills necessary to effectively guide and manage universities.  A sampling of these skills includes being a visionary thinker, building trust, transparent communication, emotional intelligence, and the ability to create and support a high-functioning team.  Additionally, his financial acumen, resilience, and relationship-building are strengths.

Dr. Miller has helped other presidents by identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement.  He has helped guide careers and has assisted presidents with complex situations and difficult people.  He has taught leaders how to expect the unexpected and how to handle situations when your opinion as a president or vice president is unpopular.

For Dr. Miller the starting point is humility.  He has taught more than 70 leaders at the AASCU New Presidents’ Academy.  His teaching focused on building and empowering leadership teams.  He discussed how to build healthy relationships with the board as well as other external stakeholders, how to fundraise in today’s environment, and how to establish a base of support.  He has created lifelong learners.

Dr. Miller has been a leader in developing public-private partnerships and diversifying revenue streams.  He and his teams have excelled at building strong government and community relationships.  He has taught leaders how to include “leading change” into their standard operating procedures.  Dr. Miller’s team at Virginia State University received nine Emmys for a marketing campaign and implemented Local Open Online Courses (LOOCS). Under his leadership, research grew and fundraising thrived. Additionally, universities for which he has been involved have academic partnerships on almost every continent.
