OVERVIEW
Dr. Susan E. Borrego served as the interim president of California State University Stanislaus for the 2023-24 academic year. That year, she raised over 1.3 million dollars, reengaged the regional community, and provided leadership to reduce the enrollment deficit projections by half. Before her appointment at CSUS, Dr. Borrego served as Chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint and as a professor. As the chancellor during the Flint water crisis, she provided leadership on campus, in the community, and in the state to address the issues that arose. Her successful leadership achievements are deeply informed by extensive campus operational experience.
During the unprecedented environmental disaster in Flint, she provided leadership to complete the most extensive capital campaign in the university’s history, raising $53 million, creating 15 new academic programs, including Physician’s Assistant and Green Chemistry, establishing the School of Nursing, and partnering with the community in significant ways.
Borrego significantly expanded both merit-based and need-based student aid during her tenure as chancellor. She created a scholarship program to help young professionals in the Flint area obtain their MA degrees. Prior to her chancellor appointment, Borrego held positions as Vice President for Enrollment Management and Planning and Vice President for Student Affairs. She dedicated much of her career to developing academic success initiatives for historically excluded students, both high-achieving and underprepared.
